BONNEY LAKE — A report from the Bonney Lake city attorney on whether skin-baring baristas can legally be required to cover up was postponed until next week.
Elected officials in Bonney Lake in Pierce County are searching for ways to regulate what baristas can wear at drive-through espresso stands.
Leaders in several cities and counties, including Snohomish County, are receiving angry calls and letters concerning a growing number of roadside stands that employ teenage girls and women clad in bikinis, lingerie and pasties.
On Saturday morning, a handful of picketers showed up at two espresso stands in Bonney Lake known for scantily clad baristas, city administrator Don Morrison said.
Bonney Lake has an ordinance in place that requires women to cover their breasts from the nipple down, Morrison said. City code also prohibits people from wearing revealing garments such as thongs or g-strings, he said.
The city attorney is looking up case law to see if Bonney Lake’s laws can be applied to espresso stands, Morrison said. He’s planning to give his report during a council work session scheduled for Tuesday.
