BREMERTON — Recreational anglers will not be able to fish along the Skokomish River as tribal leaders are reasserting control over the popular Hood Canal spot.
The Kitsap Sun reported that in light of a recent legal opinion issued by the U.S. Department of the Interior, the Skokomish Tribe is taking control of a portion of the river that runs alongside its reservation.
With that opinion, tribal officials negotiated that the lower main stem of the Skokomish will be off-limits to nontribal anglers during the Puget Sound salmon fishing season.
The lower main stem of the Skokomish River runs along the reservation’s borders before flowing into Hood Canal near Union. The stretch between a state-run salmon hatchery and the river’s mouth attracts thousands of anglers each year.
