Sky Valley Food Bank’s 30th anniversary celebration is 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 9 at 784 Village Way, Monroe. The ceremony will include testimonials by people whose lives were changed through the help of the food bank.
Sky Valley Food Bank was started in November 1976 when the late Julia Morris began handing out extra food from her back door. Her daughter, Julie Morris, continues as the director of the food bank.
With the help of 60 regular volunteers, the food bank dispenses what amounts to about 30,000 meals a month.
While the number of people served at Sky Valley Food Bank has increased over the past year, donations of food and money are down, Morris said. The food bank currently is collecting turkeys and holiday food as well as the funds necessary to purchase items in bulk in order to feed the anticipated number of food bank clients at Thanksgiving.
Donations can be sent to the Sky Valley Food Bank at P.O. Box 724, Monroe, 98272, or on site at 784 Village Way, Monroe. Call 360-794-7959.
