If those who went ice-skating Saturday had any doubt beforehand that they’d be in the right place at the right time, those doubts were erased as soon as they walked through the door.
They were hit by a blast of cool air.
“It feels nice to be in here instead of out there,” said Chris Schlosser of Marysville, who brought three of his four children to skate at the Everett Events Center ice rink Saturday as part of a Boy Scout event.
By 4 p.m., the mercury had hit 89 degrees at Paine Field, according to the National Weather Service.
Many of those at the rink had already planned to be there. And once there, they were glad they had come.
“It is the place to beat the heat,” said Tomi Sage of Marysville, who brought her own set of Boy Scouts to the rink.
“I like it,” said one of the scouts, Morgan Sage, 8, of the coolness.
The crowd was about average for a Saturday, said Rachel Catlett, ice rink supervisor. An hour into the 2:15-5:15 p.m. skating session, 29 people had taken advantage of the $5 summer rate for admission and skates, she said.
Many skaters noted how hot it was outside, said cashier Alex Knapp – and that “there’s an added benefit to ice-skating.”
Ice-skating crowds normally drop off in the summer, said Eric Blankenship, marketing director for the events center. But when it gets so hot, he said, “people want to go back inside.”
Cindy Ainsley of Lake Stevens brought 10 kids to the rink as a birthday party for her son Brandon, 8.
“It’s a perfect day for it,” she said. “It’s so nice inside.”
