Q: There is only one lane to access the southbound onramp to 1-5 or the Lakewood area heading west out of Smokey Point. There is a lot of new construction (business and residential) that continues to be built, all of which is adding to the already congested area. Are there plans to widen or improve the freeway access routes in the Smokey Point area? I heard there was in the past, but the passing of I-695 took away the project funding. Could you please find out what is happening. The backups are getting very long and time-consuming numerous times each day.
A: Dawn McIntosh, assistant area traffic engineer with the state Department of Transportation, said the I-5/172nd Street Interchange modification project, in the final design phase of development, is funded for construction.
“The project will be advertised for contractor bids in spring 2002,” McIntosh said. “Construction activities are expected to begin that summer.”
