EVERETT — Snohomish County Human Services has hired an internal candidate as its new director following the retirement of Ken Stark.
Mary Jane Brell Vujovic, the department’s division manager for housing and community services, took over leadership of the department this month. Stark had served in the position since 2008 and will help with the transition.
The county conducted a national search before promoting Brell Vujovic to the new position. She has worked in the human services field since 1973 with myriad groups including immigrants, refugees and youth, according to a county press release.
Before coming to Snohomish County in 2013, she was the director of strategic initiatives for Workforce Snohomish.
Since coming to Snohomish County, Brell Vujovic has implemented the county’s Investing in Families/Futures Initiative supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Stark’s long list of accomplishments includes playing a key role in development of the Snohomish County Triage Center, collaborating on the development of a south county detox center, and championing a recidivism-reduction project at the county’s Carnegie building.
