The state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction awarded about $590,000 in grants to Snohomish and Everett school districts last week.
The Snohomish School District received $531,484 for different energy saving projects across the district that including changing exterior lighting devices, replacing leaking copper drain lines from the condensing furnaces and installing water conservation devices in sinks and toilets.
The total cost of the projects is $1.49 million. The Snohomish School Board still needs to approve the grant, spokeswoman Kristin Foley said. It was unclear when the board would discuss it.
The Everett School District received $59,211 to change the lighting systems at Emerson, Forest View, Garfield, Jackson and Silver Lake elementary schools and Eisenhower and Gateway middle schools. The state awarded $20 million to 28 school districts for projects to reduce energy costs.
There were 54 school districts that applied for the grants. To qualify, districts had to conduct an audit on their facilities and prove it would result in energy savings.
This year’s amount is part of the $40 million appropriated by the Legislature.
