Lowland snow is in the forecast for the weekend with up to 3 inches possible Saturday in some areas of Snohomish County.
The best chance for snow to stick would be this evening, according to the National Weather Service in Seattle.
Meteorologist Dennis D’Amico said any snowfall will be “highly localized” in an area stretching from Seattle into Snohomish and Skagit counties. It could be similar to the Dec. 29 snowstorm that hit some pockets of the south county hard while missing other parts of the county altogether.
Some areas could get 1 to 3 inches, he said.
The forecast in Everett calls for light snow showers likely before 4 p.m. today, then a chance of rain, followed by more snow in the evening.
The state Department of Transportation is urging Seattle Seahawks fans to leave early for the 1:15 p.m. playoff game today with the New Orleans Saints at Qwest Field.
“I think the best chance for snow sticking on the roads is later Saturday through Sunday morning,” D’Amico said. “It’s going to be tricky when exactly it starts to impact (roads). It could be an impact for folks going home” from the game.
State Department of Transportation crews are ready with plows and sanders, and plan to spray a solution to prevent ice on the roads before the snow.
The state agency is urging drivers to allow extra time, to check routes beforehand, bring chains and slow down in snowy and icy conditions.
In Lynnwood, the South Snohomish County Emergency Shelter Network plans to operate today through Monday for all people needing overnight shelter from the cold. Dinners and breakfasts will be provided.
Those needing places to spend cold nights are asked to meet at Lynnwood City Hall, 19100 44th Ave. W., by 7 each evening to be driven to churches participating in the shelter network.
