MUKILTEO — A Mukilteo man suspected of stabbing his mother in the neck this week — sparking a police standoff — told officers he lives with a mental illness that can send him into “homicidal rages,” according to police reports filed in court.
The man, 20, was texting his mom from his downstairs bedroom, saying he wanted $200 in Social Security money, but his mother told him the money was being saved, court papers say. That angered him. He came upstairs yelling.
He punched his mother, 59, in the face, crowded her into a bedroom, slammed her head into a wooden bed frame, choked her until her eyes hemorrhaged and attacked her with a pocket knife, according to the mother’s report to police. She had three stab wounds: one to her neck, and two defensive wounds to her forearm. She suffered bite marks and a fractured cheekbone. She tried to call 911, but he took the phone from her hand and broke it, police wrote.
Eventually she escaped and ran outside. She was taken to Evergreen Hospital for emergency care. Her injuries were not considered life-threatening. She told officers her son suffers from schizophrenia, and as far as she knew, he was still inside, with knives. A SWAT team surrounded the home and called for the man to come out. They went inside, but couldn’t find him.
Officers saw a broken phone and signs of a struggle.
The 6-foot-2 man was arrested almost 12 hours later Thursday, still in the neighborhood, according to Mukilteo police. He told police in a recorded interview that his mental illness “occasionally” sent him into rages. He reportedly said he recalled arguing with his mom, but didn’t remember if it became physical. Police arrested him for investigation of first-degree assault and interfering with a report of domestic violence. He had no felony record.
An Everett District Court judge set bail Friday at $100,000.
