CAMANO ISLAND — Twins Aiden and Connor Munro started screaming when they saw the completed playground Tuesday morning.
The 5-year-olds jumped from their mom’s vehicle and raced for the new swings, slides, climbing ropes and Viking ship in the Stanwood-Camano Rotary Adventure Playground at Terry’s Corner.
The boys didn’t know that more than 1,000 people volunteered last week to build the 10,000-square-foot, $200,000 community playground.
They just knew it was wonderful.
“Yeah,” said Aiden, “I like it. It’s really fun.”
Tuesday marked the first full day of play at the park. The playground was a year in the planning. Construction began a week ago.
By 6 p.m. Sunday, most of the building was done and everybody was exhausted, volunteer coordinator Theresa Metzger said.
“It got crazier and busier as the weekend went on. Like living in an ant colony,” she said. “It’s amazing how much people can get done in five days.”
Grandma Ellen Suffern agreed.
“Why can’t they put up the new (Highway 532) bridge this fast?” Suffern joked, squeezing the hand of her grandson, Orin Osburn, 5.
Artist Jenna Delzell was finishing up Tuesday assembling an installation of colorful Northwest animals to be displayed on the playground equipment. Many area artists participated in the project.
Connor Munro took a break from playing to watch Delzell brush varnish over a painted harbor seal.
“I am so happy,” Connor said. “Because this playground is so new.”
