STANWOOD — Voters in the Stanwood-Camano School District will decide March 10 if they want to change the way they elect their school board.
Prop. 1 would redraw director districts.
The school board wants the go-ahead to change from five director districts with distinct geographical boundaries to four districts defined by boundaries and a fifth at-large position that could be filled by anyone within the entire school district and elected by all district voters.
“I believe this will open up more opportunity for people to serve,” said Roger Myers, the school board president. “By having one person at large we could have some more qualified people to run. It’s to make the pool of candidates we draw from a larger pool.”
Ballots for the all-mail election were sent to voters earlier this week.
Under the redrawn boundaries, voters would elect two board members from Camano Island and two from Stanwood. The fifth member could be from either area.
Serving on the school board is an unpaid position in the Stanwood district.
If the ballot measure passes, school director district boundaries would change by next fall.
School board director districts do not affect students’ school attendance areas and the proposal would not change the overall boundaries of the Stanwood-Camano School District.
All voters would continue to be able to vote on all five positions within the school district regardless of the director area in which they live, said Cathy Britt, a school district spokeswoman.
Current school board members will continue serving their term without any changes.
The Stanwood Library, 9701 271st St. NW, will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. March 10 for voters who want to drop off their ballots instead of mailing them.
