STANWOOD — The people of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church are building on the success of their support of an agricultural and veterinary missions project in Kenya.
For several years the Stanwood church has funded projects for the Bosongo Community and Veterinary Agri-Project under the auspices of Christian Veterinary Mission. Now the congregation is extending the opportunity for everyone to join in the effort to help people in the African country.
Church members Dan Haskins, a Stanwood veterinarian, and Ric Shallow, a mortgage loan officer who lives on Camano Island, traveled in January to the hill villages near Kisii in southwest Kenya.
Ravaged by AIDS, poverty-stricken villages such as Menyinkwa are home to many widows and children who need help with their animals, water systems and gardens. The goal is to help families create their own self-sustaining source of income, Shallow said.
Church members paid for four village wells there, have donated clothing and treats, and are raising money to provide villagers with more chickens, goats and rainwater cisterns.
Our Saviour’s Lutheran is hosting a benefit dinner March 12 to raise money for the Kenyan projects. The suggested donation is $10 for a supper that includes mango rice, tilapia, chicken parmesan, salad, steamed vegetables, pita bread and homemade desserts.
Haskins and Shallow plan to share slides and stories from their recent trip to Africa. Kenyan artwork will be for sale and there will be chances to win raffle items and door prizes.
