STANWOOD — The resurgence of a 1950s-era car club has produced one of Stanwood’s largest charitable fundraisers.
The Twin City Idlers club’s sixth-annual car, truck and motorcycle show is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday in downtown Stanwood. The show features classic cars, hot rods, custom vehicles and more.
Proceeds benefit charities and low-income families in the Stanwood area, club president Les Anderson said.
“We’d just love to have a lot of people come and help make this a great event,” said Anderson, who is also public works supervisor for Stanwood. “You won’t see any nicer cars anywhere in the country than you’ll see in Stanwood this weekend.”
Main Street will be closed Sunday from Stanwood Middle School to the railroad tracks on the east end of downtown.
In recent years, the Twin City Idlers club has donated to the Stanwood Camano Community Resource Center, the Stanwood-Camano Food Bank and the Stanwood Community &Senior Center. The club also gives a scholarship each year to a graduating high school student who plans to pursue an automotive career.
Show organizers hope to see more than 500 vehicles registered for Sunday’s event.
“The show’s growing a lot,” Anderson said. “Last year was a questionable weather year, and we had 320 cars. The year before we had around 400.”
Twin City Idlers was formed in the 1950s. After years of inactivity, the club was reformed about seven years ago by a group of automobile enthusiasts in Stanwood.
Now the club has grown to 101 members.
Anderson plans on showing his 1965 Ford Econoline pickup. The rare vehicle looks like a van that was made into a truck, he said.
“It’s just fun to drive them,” Anderson said. “You just drive down the road, and people honk their horn so they can look at you and give you a thumbs-up.”
