STANWOOD – A 67-year-old disabled man died early today when fire broke out in his apartment.
Neighbors heard the man, who is confined to a recliner, pounding on the wall and then heard his smoke detector activate, Stanwood Fire Chief Scott Koehler said. The neighbors called 911 and firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames coming out the front door of the man’s second-floor apartment.
Neighbors used a half-dozen fire extinguishers to slow the fire and managed to keep it from spreading beyond the victim’s apartment, Koehler said.
An autopsy is scheduled Tuesday.
The cause of the fire is under investigation but it is not considered suspicious, Koehler said.
