STANWOOD — Sara Gosnold kept nine trophies at her office this week.
The trophies will be given to the winners of different categories Saturday in the Stanwood Camano Community Parade, said Gosnold. She is a member of The Rotary Club of Stanwood-Camano Island, a group that organizes the annual parade.
“I’ve been telling people all week that I’ve won ‘Miss Congeniality’ but they don’t believe me,” Gosnold said.
The event is set to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday along 271st Street NW. This year’s parade theme is “March of Freedom: Honoring our Military Past, Present and Future.”
Representatives from different military branches and wars will be part of the parade, said event chair Jean Mamales, who is also a Rotarian. The volunteer group is working to schedule a fly-over by aircraft from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island to start the parade, she said.
“What we want to do is really support our military,” Mamales said.
A total of 74 entries including floats, bands and cars is expected to be part of the event. American Legion Post 92 at 26921 88th Ave. NW will be open before and after the parade. Entry fees for the parade are put toward scholarships The Rotary Club of Stanwood-Camano Island awards to local students.
The summer parade is an anticipated event that many people can remember going to as kids, Gosnold said.
“We enjoy it because it’s such a small-town activity,” she said. “This year is a very special year because we’re celebrating the veterans.”
