STANWOOD — A solid regular season means Stanwood High School has advanced to the finals of the annual Hi-Q academic competition that matches wits among some of the region’s top students.
As the top-scoring team in a field of 18 schools, Stanwood has earned the right to host the finals at 9:55 a.m. Tuesday in the school’s performing arts center.
“They have done very well,” said Linda Summers, who is coordinating the competition for Everett Community College, the main sponsor. “I’m just so impressed with the poise of all the students on stage from all the schools.”
Semifinal matches among other qualifiers are set for Saturday morning in EvCC’s Parks Building.
Arlington, Lake Stevens and Meadowdale will square off at 10 a.m.
Mountlake Terrace, Lakewood and Monroe will compete at 11 a.m.
The winner of each round will advance to the three-team final against Stanwood.
Hi-Q is the oldest continuous academic quiz competition for high school students in the nation. It started in 1948 in Pennsylvania and began in Washington in 1976.
Questions are based on 14 standard high school courses, such as American history, chemistry, literature, math, physics and world history.
Members of the Stanwood team are Jimmy Besancon, Kyle Blackburn, Derek Britain, Tyler Miller, Teague Nelson, Max Osnes, John “Alec” Parker and Rebecca Raible. Their adviser is Kathy Redfern.
