EVERETT – A Stanwood woman convicted in the traffic death of teenage boy is behind bars.
Snohomish County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Jina Milius, 19, Wednesday afternoon at her grandmother’s home.
A judge issued a warrant for her arrest on Tuesday after Milius failed to show up for sentencing in Snohomish County Superior Court. She pleaded guilty July 21 to vehicular homicide in the death of Joey Calavan, 15.
The boy died Aug. 29, 2003, after Milius lost control of her car, hit a culvert, and the car rolled over. The Stanwood woman was driving drunk and swerved erratically on a narrow rural road to scare the boy, according to court documents.
Instead of calling for help, she walked away from the crash and was later found at a friend’s house more than a mile from the scene, court papers said.
Three hours after the crash, tests showed Milius’ blood-alcohol level was still twice the legal limit, according to court papers. She faces up to three years and five months in prison when she is sentenced Sept. 27. Milius is being held without bail.
Joey Calavan was the first of two brothers killed in less than a year’s time. His older brother, Cody Calavan, 19, a U.S. Marine Corps machine gunner, died in an explosion in Iraq in May.
