ELLENSBURG — The Washington Fish and Wildlife Department has started winter feeding of hay to about 500 elk at a location 15 miles northwest of Ellensburg, even though there’s no snow on the ground and some forage is available.
The manager of the department’s L.T. Murray Wildlife Area, Shana Winegeart, says the aim of the daily feeding is to keep the elk in the area to prevent them from wandering into farm fields and private property where they could cause trouble or onto highways where they could be hit.
The Daily Record reported the herd is part of the larger Yakima herd, estimated at nearly 12,000 elk on the west side of the Yakima River in Kittitas and Yakima counties.
