OLYMPIA — Bills that help clear the way for Washington State University to start a medical school in Spokane have passed both the state House and Senate higher education committees.
Both bills passed Tuesday. Each changes an old state law that restricts physician education to the University of Washington.
The Spokesman-Review reported that before passing the bill, the House committee rejected a proposal to study for a year the need for expanded medical services and the best way to fill it.
Another amendment that would have required WSU to prove it would teach students standard practices on reproductive health and end-of-life issues was withdrawn.
The two bills do not set aside money for medical training in Spokane.
