State Patrol seeks drivers who saw crash

LYNNWOOD – Washington State Patrol troopers are searching for drivers who witnessed a crash that killed Shannon Mikkelson on Nov. 3.

Mikkelson, 35, of Mukilteo died after hitting a trailer parked at a construction site on the side of I-5 near 196th Street SW. She was headed north in a beige Lexus shortly after 8 p.m. when another car suddenly changed lanes in front of her, witnesses told police.

She swerved to avoid the car, went off the road and ran into a flatbed trailer, the State Patrol reported. She died at the scene.

Investigators are still seeking additional witnesses who saw the crash, including a driver who stopped at the scene. That driver was in a two-door 1990s model Ford Escort that was purple or maroon.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call State Patrol detective Don Cunningham at 360-658-2588.

Arlington: Black box helps in homicide case

Data recorded in a “black box” computer aboard a passenger car contributed to a felony vehicular homicide charge Thursday for an Arlington woman.

Cleora Swirtz, 22, was driving at speeds up to 104 mph just before crashing a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire into a tree along 99th Avenue NE, according to Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Joan Cavagnaro.

An analysis of scuff marks and gouges left in the roadway showed the vehicle was traveling 102 mph at the time of the accident, Cavagnaro said in Superior Court papers. Data stored in a computer that monitors the car’s operations placed Swirtz’s speed at 104 mph.

A passenger in the car, Randall Allyn Frank, 17, died from injuries to his head and trunk, according to court papers.
