ARLINGTON — A roundabout scheduled to be built this summer at the intersection of Highway 9 and 172nd Street NE has been delayed until next year.
The state Department of Transportation plans to postpone the project because it couldn’t be started and finished this year.
“We got a late start on buying the property needed to widen the highway,” said transportation engineering manager Jay Drye. “We weren’t quite able to wrap up everything in time to build the project this year.”
The roundabout is now scheduled to be built during the summer of 2012. The project is being funded with $15.6 million from the 2005 gas tax.
Transportation department engineers believe the roundabout will make travel safer and relieve congestion for the 16,000 drivers who use the intersection each day.
Arlington public works director James Kelly has made arrangements to delay the installation of city utilities in the area.
