RICHLAND — The Washington state Department of Ecology released for public comment a draft permit for regulating hazardous and radioactive waste left from decades of plutonium production at the Hanford nuclear reservation.
The state first issued the permit in 1994, and the draft released Tuesday marks the first reissue of the permit. The regulatory document is Washington’s largest such document at more than 16,000 pages.
The Ecology Department has scheduled a full-day public workshop on the permit May 3 in Richland, as well as four public hearings to share information. The hearings will be held May 15 in Seattle, May 16 in Portland, June 5 in Spokane and June 6 in Richland.
The public comment period runs through Sept. 30.
