OLYMPIA – Residents who legally pack a concealed weapon in North Carolina, Mississippi and Ohio can now carry them while visiting in Washington.
Under a new law, Washington must recognize other states’ concealed weapon licenses if those licenses are issued under the same guidelines as used here.
Also, the law requires that Washington residents be allowed to bring their permitted firearms to the other states.
State Sen. Val Stevens, R-Arlington, wrote the law.
The Attorney General’s Office is surveying the other states and compiling a list of which qualify. As of Wednesday, three had, 17 had not and statutes of four others are pending review. Responses from the 25 other states are expected by the end of the month.
Most of the states that did not qualify lacked a law to recognize licenses held by Washington residents.
The list of qualified states is posted on the Web site of the state Attorney General at www.atg.wa.gov.
