The Steamboat Slough bridge on northbound Highway 529 entering Marysville is getting a new paint job, and mariners will need to prepare for long-term maritime closures this summer.
The movable section of the bridge won’t be able to operate with the added weight of a containment system used for repainting. Bridge openings will be prohibited for several months; no specific dates have yet been set.
Vehicle drivers can expect single-lane closures overnight until early afternoon on work days, a schedule that aims to avoid the afternoon rush hour.
Work on the $7.4 million project is getting underway and should be complete by fall. Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will encase a section of the bridge at a time to sandblast, prime and paint. New paint will help prolong the life of the steel truss bridge by protecting it from rust and corrosion.
