COLVILLE, Wash. — Stevens County prosecutor Tim Rasmussen has upset the county’s two Superior Court judges, who have asked the state bar association to investigate Rasmussen’s practice of encouraging some defense attorneys to contribute to a Guatemalan orphanage he supports.
Judges Rebecca Baker and Al Nielson said they worry that lawyers who donate to Rasmussen’s pet charity might at least appear to get favorable treatment from the prosecutor.
Rasmussen told the bar association that he has never solicited donations from Stevens County defense attorneys, nor from any criminal defense attorney with whom he has regular contact. Most of the attorneys named are from Spokane County.
