The highway across Stevens Pass reopened this morning after being closed for nearly a day due to avalanche danger.
Crews opened U.S. 2 at Scenic just after 8 a.m., said Meghan Soptich, a state Department of Transportation spokeswoman.
Tires chains are required on vehicles traveling through the area, she said.
Snoqualmie Pass, the state’s other main east-to-west route also is open after being closed for most of New Year’s Day, she said.
White Pass remains closed this morning as crews clear away a snow slide.
The Stevens Pass ski area is open through 10 p.m. today, weather permitting, according to its Web site.
Forecasters said snow is expected to continue to fall through the weekend in the mountains and avalanche dangers remain.
In the lowlands, snow and rain showers are expected through the day with spots of blue sky and sun, said Chris Burke, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Seattle.
Some areas in the lowlands, especially on higher hills, could see snow accumulation of up to one inch, Burke said.
A dusting of snow covered the Alderwood area this morning.
Any snow that does fall in western Snohomish County is expected to quickly melt away.
