STEVENS PASS— The wait is just about over. Stevens Pass should soon open for the season.
With new snowfall, low temperatures and a favorable forecast, the mountain ski resort expects to open at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Five of the 10 chair lifts are scheduled to start running that day. Other lifts will open when Stevens Pass gets more snow, with expectations that it will happen soon.
“We are receiving more snow. It was snowing this morning,” director of marketing Chris Rudolph said.
Steven Pass had 32 inches of snow at the top Monday. The resort usually waits until it has 36 inches of snow, but resort officials believe the snow is compact enough to allow the skiing to start.
Other ski resorts have already opened. The Mount Baker Ski Area and Crystal Mountain opened earlier this month. Both those slopes are about 21/2 hours from Everett. Stevens Pass, roughly 90 minutes away, is the home slope for most Snohomish County skiers.
This opening date is historically earlier than average, Rudolph said.
Because of the La Nina climate cycle and forecasts by University of Washington and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, skiers expect a big snow year, Rudolph said.
