ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A massive storm that pummeled Nome earlier this month also prevented the last barge from delivering gasoline and diesel fuel before winter sets in on Alaska’s western coastline.
The city of 9,000 is now iced-in and a plan is in the works to fly in fuel in what could be a logistical nightmare requiring round-the-clock deliveries by air, weather permitting.
Sitnasuak Native Corp. board chairman Jason Evans says the storm prevented a 1.6-million gallon fuel delivery. He says the native corporation is a major supplier to the city, with between 800 and 1,000 customers, including the hospital and schools. Evans says the most likely plan now is to deliver fuel 4,000 to 6,000 gallons at a time.
