PORTLAND, Ore.— A chemical tanker stranded in the Pacific Ocean after a deadly fire is being towed to the San Francisco Bay Area for repairs.
Ship spokesman Campbell Houston said Wednesday that a tugboat from Washington state has begun moving the 485-foot ship, and it is expected to take a week or two to reach port.
Last week’s fire in the engine room killed a crewman and left the ship without propulsion roughly 700 miles west of Cape Blanco, Oregon. The crewman was buried at sea.
The tanker is named Pine Galaxy. It left Southern California on Aug. 9, bound for South Korea with a cargo of propylene tetramer, a petroleum additive.
