MARYSVILLE – “Grease” could be the word, be the word, be the word, at Marysville’s newest high school.
The school district is gathering suggested names for the school from students and area residents.
It is getting plenty of ideas.
Long shots so far include Wolf Haven, Smart Cookies and Eagle Vision high schools.
And then there is Rydell High School, a reference to the goofy 1950s campus from the rock ‘n’ roll musical “Grease.”
Marysville’s new $79 million high school is four to five years from opening, but could get its name this fall.
The Rydell suggestion drew a chuckle from David Dilgard, a regional historian with the Everett Public Library.
“They could do worse, I guess,” he said, noting that Bobby Rydell was a rock ‘n’ roll teen idol in the 1960s.
Dilgard was more impressed with local historical suggestions, including Getchell Hill.
“I love the idea because it might inspire people to look a little more at local history,” he said.
The new school will be built on Getchell Hill, which is named after homesteaders Lysander and Lillian Getchell, who moved to the area in the 1880s.
The Marysville School District began collecting suggestions at an open house Thursday evening and will continue to do so over the summer.
As of Friday, 17 ideas had been offered.
Some, like Getchell, follow the area’s history and geography: Hill Top, Ridge View, Glacier Peak, Bayview.
District leaders hope to fatten the list.
“We would like to hear from people,” said Superintendent Larry Nyland.
School board policy requires names of elementary and secondary schools come from “names in the area, geographical landmarks and area names of historical significance.”
The policy requires the superintendent to select a committee, which will submit a list of three to five names for the new school.
The list must state why the committee nominated each name.
Suggestions can be made to Jody Runyon in the district office. The mailing address is 4220 80th St. NE, Marysville, 98270, or e-mail to Jody_Runyon@msvl.k12.wa.us.
