SULTAN– The Sultan Food Bank is under new management.
There’s still a lease to be signed, but the Volunteers of America organization has been running day-to-day food bank operations, at 703 First St., for weeks
The transfer is not official until the VOA signs the lease, which is expected to be finalized by April 1.
The change came after the food bank began having trouble keeping volunteers and donations were not keeping up with demand.
“We wanted to make sure the food bank remains open, no matter what,” director Dave Wood said.
Clients should not expect big changes with the new administration. The hours of operation are not expected to change. However, there are plans to expand the number of days for receiving donations of food, Wood said.
Currently, the food bank only accepts donations on Thursdays and Fridays.
There also are plans to paint the exterior and change the sign outside to Volunteers of America Western Washington Food Bank.
Volunteers of America has helped the food bank before by providing volunteers.
By taking over the operation, the food bank can now use services from Volunteers of America.
This is not the only food bank being operated by the organization. Others are in Everett and north Seattle.
The VOA also operates a food bank distribution center in Everett, distributing goods to 20 food banks in Snohomish County.
Volunteers already have received training from the branch in Everett about food distribution, computer systems and health safety. Drivers also have received training.
Volunteers of America will receive the same deal the food bank got from the city, paying monthly rent of $280 for the 3,000 square-foot building, city administrator Deborah Knight said.
