My gardening year is officially a success.
I have grown enough tomatoes that a few have made it inside the house. I know, I know, that doesn’t sound like much, but to me it’s huge.
I love tomatoes. I adore tomatoes. I’m so fond of them that it’s a family joke. When a plate of tomatoes is passed around the table, my family makes sure it comes to me last. “Otherwise, we won’t get any,” they say, and they’re probably right.
So, the fact that a single tomato has made it inside the house is a huge success. Usually I eat the tomatoes the moment I pick them. I’ve had enough this year to satisfy my off-the-vine snacking and even to supply a few salads. I’m a happy gardener.
Also, I had a fun surprise with my garden earlier this year. My friend gave me some seeds that she told me were cucumbers. I planted them and watched them grow with interest. They didn’t look like the cucumber plants I remembered, but I have never actually grown them. I kept watching and eventually they flowered and created a nice, round fruit.
It’s not a cucumber, but it’s really a lovely summer squash.
