Summer Jubilee in Marysville prepares thousands of students for back-to-school

EVERETT — It’s August and the days are long and hot. Who could possibly be thinking about back-to-school?

It turns out, more than 10,000 Snohomish County kids are doing just that. That’s roughly how many young people make the annual trek to Marysville’s biggest and loudest back-to-school event — Summer Jubliee.

Organizers expect at least that many kids to attend this year.

The 2008 Summer Jubilee is set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Marysville Junior High School’s Asbery Field, 1605 Seventh St., Marysville.

It’s a daylong youth event packed with free music, entertainment, haircuts, bounce houses, obstacle courses, games, cotton candy, snow cones, skateboarding ramps, a tent with video games, break-dancing and a live disc jockey. There are raffles for prizes including a free computer, gift cards, gym memberships and bicycles.

“And it’s all free,” said Emily Masten, 21, receptionist at Turning Point Church World Outreach Center, one of the churches that helps organize the event. Masten said she’s attended every jubilee since she was a junior in high school.

Summer Jubilee kicks off with a service at 10 a.m. followed by the activities on the field starting at 11 a.m. Organizers plan to hand out free school supplies for students from kindergarten to the 12th grade. They’ll provide free haircuts for all the kids and barbecued hot dogs with all the fixings.

Summer Jubilee was launched by Turning Point Community Church, now called Turning Point Church World Outreach Center. The event is now organized by a group of churches from around the region led by David Luster, a pastor at Turning Point, and Judi Johnston, a member of Turning Point, said Masten.

New this year is a performance by Noonday Sun, a five-member Northwest Christian worship band that has been performing in the area for six years. There are also scheduled visits by statewide dignitaries, Masten said.

Summer Jubilee is fun with a purpose. This year, those who attend are asked to bring donations of nonperishable food items to help needy people. Donations are not required. Organizers plan to donate the food to the Marysville Food Bank.

Volunteers will begin setting up for the event at 8:45 a.m. today at Asbery Field. Those who wish to help are welcome.
