New home: Moved from Fiji to live with her father in Everett a little more than a year ago. Started at Everett High School midway through sophomore year after about seven months at Mariner High School in south Everett.
The transition: “It’s not hard for me. I’m not a shy person. It’s easy for me to socialize.”
Differences: “Back in Fiji in school we wear uniforms and we don’t move from class to class. We don’t have lockers.”
Sports nut: Will try out for the Seagulls’ basketball team this year. Played several sports in Fiji, including volleyball – her favorite – basketball, rugby and netball, a variation of basketball.
On rugby: “It’s fun. Although we tackle each other and all, we have the passion to play and just take it as a game.”
Community involvement: At the suggestion of her principal, looked into volunteering at Dawson Place Child Advocacy Center. She’s now its youngest board member. “We get together and find solutions or ways to help people who need help. It’s fun. I’m like representing the youth today.”
Classes: Taking English, geometry, U.S. history, physical education and coordinated science. Likes them all, but P.E. is the best.
Activities: Hanging out with friends watching movies or shopping at the mall, and being with her sister.
Family: Mother and four siblings are in Fiji; she and a sister live with their dad and stepmother in Everett.
Looks up to: God, her parents and her older sister.
Beyond high school: Plans to go to college. Wants to be both a doctor and a professional volleyball player. If she achieves the volleyball goal, would also like to open her own gym and teach the game to children.
Message to classmates: “If you have problems and don’t have anyone to talk to and nobody understands you, I’m here. … I don’t think of people as different. Everyone is equal.”
