Active: As senior class president, National Honor Society president, a head cheerleader and a member of Drug-Free Youth, Teens Against Tobacco Use and the Leaders of the Pack freshmen mentoring group, she can be at school for as long as 16 hours on big event days.
And loving it: “I love school. I love the community you have at school and the people … It’s like my second home. I feel most comfortable at school.”
On pointe: She has danced for 13 years, mainly ballet. She has received scholarships for some well-known summer camps held at Whitman College, as well as taught younger girls how to do plies and pirouettes. “It’s fun to find the kids who really want to be there.”
Only child: Without siblings of her own, she finds the varsity cheerleading team to be a great alternative. “We’re all just like sisters.”
Volunteers: She works with Morning Light, a Kenmore-based rock band with a nonprofit focus that visits prisons to mentor and encourage recovering addicts and alcoholics. “It’s really empowering. It makes you thankful for everything you have and have been given.”
Inspired by experience: She has known people who struggled with alcoholism and it taught her empathy. “Everyone carries a heavy burden and has a story.” The experience also helped her build her own confidence. “It’s really helped me find my inner voice and a relationship with God.”
Beyond high school: She wants to major in political science with an international relations focus and a French minor. She could see herself working with women in developing countries.
Prospects: She’s applied to American University in Washington, D.C.; St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.; the University of Washington; and Western Washington University. She also is considering Seattle Pacific University.
Looks up to: Leadership teacher Judi Montgomery is her role model. “Whenever I need anything, she’s there to help me out. … I really look up to her.”
Movie: She last saw the gymnastics-themed film “Stick It.” “I fell asleep during it, not going to lie.”
Books: Currently has bookmarks in “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” and “The Purpose-Driven Life.” Also reading “Les Miserables” after seeing the musical with her French class last year. “Everyone should have some theater in their life. It makes it more fun.”
