Priorities: Moved to the United States two years ago to live with her brother and get an education. Wants to do well in her classes and go to a university. “I do my homework as soon as I get home.”
Not always the case: “When I was in first, second and third grade, I was never serious about school. I didn’t care. I was extra stubborn.”
Family ties: Calls and e-mails her parents in Gambia at least every two weeks. Misses them but understands the decision for her to study in America.
Also misses: “The sun.”
Favorite season: Summer. It’s sunny, and she can go to the beach.
New school: Likes the diverse student body at Lynnwood High School, which has students from many corners of the world.
Cool memory: “It snowed the day we came here. It was like, wow. It was real to me. I had heard about snow, but never was actually able to see the snow.”
Career plans: Undecided, possibly medicine. Unsure where she will set down roots. “I really don’t want to stay in one place.”
Open mind: Likes all kinds of music, even those she wouldn’t hear in Gambia. “I never listened to country music before and now I listen to it.”
Favorite fruit: Grapes.
Worldly sense: Is getting an A in geography, which has included lessons on Egypt, China, India and Rome. Laughs when asked when she’ll learn about Gambia.
Gambia to Gryffindor: Has read all the “Harry Potter” books and likes the imagination involved.
