Snohomish County was either a winter wonderland early today or a winter disaster after a surprise snowstorm over night.
The forecast calls for more snow tonight and Thursday.
The overnight rain and snow produced renewed surges in the Skykomish and Stillaguamish rivers, both of which crested midmorning today a few feet above flood stage.
Typical flood-prone areas near Ben Howard Road in the Sky Valley and Marine View Drive and other farm roads near Silvana and Stanwood were under water this morning.
The Snohomish River continues to rise. It was more than 2 feet above the 25-foot flood stage at Snohomish and is expected to crest at about 28 feet at 6 p.m.
Snow fell all over the county, from a few inches in Lake Stevens to a foot on Stevens Pass.
Schools was delayed two hours in Everett and canceled in Mill Creek and Snohomish. The latter two cities also were dealing with power outages.
The snow could be good news for skiers, but this morning’s commute on I-5 was even slower than usual as travelers dealt with snow in south Everett and the Lynnwood area.
The snow level was only supposed to go down to 1,000 feet.
Snowplows were clearing roads in some areas, and could be even busier tonight. Downed trees also were causing problems in certain areas.
