MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — A robbery suspect is now under lock and key after he reportedly beat down a man using an unusual weapon.
The Edmonds man, 38, on Tuesday used a heavy padlock attached to a bandanna to repeatedly clobber the victim, according to police reports.
Officers were summoned to the 5000 block of 216th Place SW after receiving multiple reports about a man in the street yelling “Help me!”
They found the victim dazed and bleeding from multiple wounds to his head. Witnesses described the weapon and the suspect to police.
The victim said he knew the suspect, and he’d given him a ride from an Everett casino. The suspect reportedly was angry about losing $900 while gambling. The victim said he had $140 in his pockets before the attack, but only $7 after.
Police tracked down the suspect. He allegedly acknowledged the attack and said it was in retaliation for some comments about his girlfriend.
The padlock and bandanna combo is a weapon said to be popular with some outlaw biker groups. The lock is carried in a pocket with the bandanna hanging out for easy access. It is an improvised slungshot — essentially a heavy weight attached to a flexible handle — and considered a dangerous weapon under state law.
