STANWOOD – A bicycle ride to school turned into a trip to the hospital for two Stanwood Middle School students on Thursday.
Three boys riding a single bike were heading out of a grocery store parking lot about 7:25 a.m. when they collided with a sport utility vehicle, Stanwood Police Chief Tom Davis said.
The driver, an off-duty Swinomish tribal police officer, was leaving the school parking lot in the 9400 block of 271st Street NW. He called 911.
Medics took two of the boys to Providence Everett Medical Center’s Colby Campus. The boys did not appear to have life-threatening injuries, Davis said.
The third boy was treated and released at the school.
Detectives with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office investigated.
Based on interviews with the boys, witnesses and the driver, it did not appear that the officer was at fault, Davis said. He is not expected to face any charges, the chief said.
The officer wasn’t at the school on police business, Davis added.
“Thank goodness he was driving at a low speed. It could have been tragic,” Davis said.
The accident is a reminder to drivers and pedestrians to use extra precaution in school zones, he said.
“It is our own behavior as drivers and pedestrians that makes a school zone truly safe,” Davis said.
