At one time or another, we’ve all come up with excuses of why we don’t want to do something.
Usually we say these things to get out of work or physical activity: “I didn’t run laps today because it was drizzling.” “I’d walk to the store, but I stubbed my toe.” “I can’t go to the office because I have the sniffles.”
But occasionally something happens that makes us realize how insignificant these obstacles are.
That’s the case with today’s front-page story, sports editor David Pan’s feature on Kayla Wheeler. The 13-year-old girl from Lynnwood has been training for an international swim meet and leaves this week for the competition in Brazil.
What is already an amazing story becomes even more inspiring when you consider that Kayla was born with only part of one arm and no legs.
The teenager hasn’t let that — or anything — stop her from pursuing her goals, either academic or athletic. In addition to posting some of the fastest swim times in the world for her class, Kayla is taking high school-level math as an eighth-grader at Madrona K-8 School.
Kind of puts those sniffles into perspective, doesn’t it?
