Tacoma police paid for playing basketball

TACOMA — From now on, if Tacoma police take part in a charity fundraising event, they’ll have to do it on their own time.

A whistleblower complaint disclosed that about a dozen officers were paid for a full shift in May for playing a basketball game to benefit a group that fights drugs and gangs in the Hilltop neighborhood. Other officers were required to cover some of the shifts on overtime.

Police spokesman Mark Fulghum told The News Tribune of Tacoma it probably wasn’t the best way to get involved in a worthy cause.

The Hilltop Challenge game raised about $7,000 for the Hilltop Action Coalition.
