MARYSVILLE — The Tacoma break dancing team Dance Broomz beat out local talent to win the 360 Break Battle on Saturday at the Marysville YMCA.
More than 300 people attended the break dancing contest, said YMCA volunteer Arthur Bongat, 18, of Marysville, who helped organize the event.
"The break dancing competition turned out better than usual," Bongat said. "There was a lot of energy, everyone was screaming and cheering."
Dance Broomz’ first-place finish earned the six-member team the $600 grand prize. Massive Monkees of Seattle came in second, followed by Bongat’s team Misguided Motions, of Tacoma and Marysville.
Battle Reflex, which includes dancers from throughout the state, took fourth.
Everett team Diverse Skillaz lost to Marysville team Rhythmic Motions in round one, Bongat said.
The YMCA in Marysville plans to hold another 360 Break Battle next year, he said. The center is also is scheduled to host a competition for local break dancers this summer called Breaking the Silence.
"We hope the competition will grow more," Bongat said. "Hopefully, it will just keep getting better."
