As the state Legislature enters its second day of a special session, the prospect of teacher layoffs is becoming a reality in Monroe.
On Monday night, the leaders of the Monroe School District agreed to send layoff notices to more than a dozen instructors in elementary and secondary schools. All told, they want to reduce the instructor work force by 14.5 full-time equivalent positions.
Herald writer Alejandro Dominguez has the story here.
One reason for the layoffs is an anticipated reduction in state funding based on the proposed budgets passed by the Senate and House. The other reason is a decline in students.
Pink slips will be going to history, math, science and language arts teachers, according to this chart prepared by the district.
State law requires certificated personnel be notified of their possible layoff by May 15.
The Washington Education Association will be tracking the number of notices issued around the state, said spokesman Rich Wood.
At this point, Monroe appears to be the first in Snohomish County and one of the first in the state to settle on a number for layoffs, he said.
