Teen-agers break into Mountlake Terrace mosque

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE – A Mountlake Terrace mosque was broken into early Wednesday morning by three teen-agers who were allegedly looking for items to steal, police said.

A caretaker who unlocked the Masjid Omar Al Farooq Mosque in the 5500 block of 238th Street SW for morning prayers discovered the teens inside the building and called police, said Mountlake Terrace Police Department Sgt. Jonathan Wender.

The three pushed past the caretaker and fled, but a 16-year-old boy was taken into custody about an hour later after he was discovered with the help of a police department K-9 unit.

The teen-ager reportedly told police he and the two others were looking for items to steal. Police believe the break-in was not a hate-inspired incident.

The break-in was reported at around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. No items were reported missing from the building.

In November, several windows were broken in the mosque and a curtain was ignited, causing fire damage estimated at $1,500. Three people were charged in connection with that incident.

Skykomish

Head-on crash: Three people were injured Sunday morning in a head-on crash on U.S. 2 about five miles west of Skykomish, closing the highway for about an hour.

A Honda Civic and an Oldsmobile Alero collided shortly before 11:15 a.m. in the eastbound lane, the Washington State Patrol reported.

Jennifer Sullivan, an 18-year-old from Bothell, was driving westbound on U.S. 2 in the Honda Civic. She was airlifted to Harborview Regional Medical Center in Seattle, where she was undergoing surgery and in critical condition Sunday night.

Teddy Kuhn, a 70-year-old man from Garden Grove, Calif., was driving the car traveling in the eastbound lane. He was taken to Providence Everett Medical Center’s Colby Campus and later airlifted to Harborview.

Joan Newman, a 59-year-old Everett woman, was a passenger in Kuhn’s car. She was listed in serious condition with chest and abdominal injuries at Providence’s Colby Campus Saturday.

The highway was bare and dry Sunday morning.

Fire damages apartment stairway: A fire damaged a stairwell at a Lynnwood apartment complex Friday evening but did not spread to any apartments, Snohomish County Fire District 1 officials said.

The fire at the Keeler’s Corner apartments in the 4500 block of 164th St. SW was reported at 7:20 p.m. No one was injured.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, said Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes.

Granite Falls

Man charged: A Granite Falls man was charged Friday with vehicular assault for his alleged role in a crash Tuesday that left three teens seriously injured.

Louis-Erin Abraham Shook, 19, was driving in a reckless manner prior to the mishap, Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Joan Cavagnaro charged in a single-page criminal complaint filed in Everett District Court.

Shook and a 16-year-old Granite Falls boy allegedly were racing their cars through town, reportedly driving 80 to 90 mph in a 25-mph zone. The 16-year-old allegedly ran a stop sign at the intersection of E. Pioneer Street and S. Granite Avenue, then slammed into the dump-truck trailer.

The 16-year-old and both passengers were seriously injured. The 16-year-old, who had a restricted license prohibiting passengers in his car, also is under investigation for vehicular assault, police say.
