MARYSVILLE — Authorities expect to decide Monday whether a 17-year-old boy will be charged as an adult in a reportedly accidental shooting that killed his best friend.
The youth was being held in the Denney Juvenile Justice Center in Everett on $25,000 bail on investigation of second-degree manslaughter. An employee at the center declined to say if he was still in custody Friday evening.
Chase Roodzant, 17, died Thursday at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after he was shot in the face with a 9 mm handgun.
The two Marysville teens were visiting a 26-year-old man at the Casita Villa apartment complex in the 6900 block of 47th Avenue NE when the shooting occurred at about 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Investigators say Roodzant’s friend was holding the gun when it went off. The adult, who owns the gun, had walked out of the room before the shooting, Marysville police Cmdr. Robb Lamoureux said.
Authorities have not determined whether the man will face any charges, Lamoureux said.
"That’s still under review, and we’re working with the prosecutor’s office," he said.
Investigators have not said why the teen had possession of the gun.
"At this point, detectives want to be absolutely certain they have a clear understanding of the events that led to the tragic death of a young boy," he said.
