MOUNTLAKE TERRACE – Two teenage boys were arrested Wednesday for allegedly stealing a car, then dousing it with gasoline and setting it ablaze, Mountlake Terrace police said.
One of the boys told police he started the fire to destroy evidence that he had stolen the car, Sgt. Doug Hansen said.
Police and firefighters were called about 8 p.m. Wednesday to a car fire in the 4900 block of 238th Street SW.
Witnesses told police they believed the fire was deliberately set and the car was stolen.
Police confirmed that the car, a 1989 Toyota Camry, was taken from a Mountlake Terrace home earlier in the day, Hansen said.
Officers were led to the boys, both of whom live in the area. They were arrested without incident.
The boys admitted knowing that the car was stolen, Hansen said.
The older boy told police he poured gasoline on the car and set in on fire because he was concerned about police finding fingerprints.
The 16-year-old was booked into the Denney Juvenile Justice Center for investigation of possession of stolen property and arson.
The younger boy, 14, is being investigated for possession of stolen property and was released to his mother.
