LAKE STEVENS — Two teenagers were arrested Monday in connection with a burglary and arson at Skyline Elementary in Lake Stevens.
“We’re estimating about $4,000 in damage,” Lake Stevens School District spokeswoman Jayme Taylor said.
The suspects were an 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy. The man was booked into the Snohomish County Jail, and the boy was taken to the Denney Juvenile Justice Center. They are accused of second-degree burglary and second-degree arson. Both are felony allegations.
The break-in set off an alarm at the school about 3 a.m. Monday. Lake Stevens officers arrived to find the remnants of a small fire in a rack that held rolls of colored butcher paper, Sgt. Rob Miner said Tuesday. It appeared a rock had been thrown through two windows.
A police dog search and footprints in the snow led to a nearby home where the 18-year-old lives. The 16-year-old was found walking in the same area about 5 a.m.
The 16-year-old reportedly admitted to climbing in through a window at the school, but he said it was broken before he arrived. One other young person who was detained was later released.
The mess was cleaned up Monday, and a damaged door and windows were boarded up, Taylor said.
