SEATTLE — Transportation officials say a billing error caused drivers to be incorrectly charged for 226,000 trips in the Interstate 405 express lanes.
KING-TV reports the Washington Department of Transportation estimates the error impacted trips between Dec. 17 and Dec. 25. Officials say drivers were charged $0.56 more or $1.85 less than they owed on average.
Officials are working to correct all customer charges and the affected drivers will only be charged the minimum toll rate of $0.75.
The department says the glitch was caused by the toll equipment vendor, Schneider Electric, which was charging customers at a default rate and not the rate generated by the system.
Department officials say Schneider Electric will cover the costs for lost toll revenue and to correct the error for customers.
