LYNNWOOD – A Seattle man with a suspended driver’s license led police on a nearly 20-mile chase that started in Lynnwood and ended on an I-5 offramp in Shoreline.
The pursuit started shortly after 11 p.m. on Thanksgiving when a Lynnwood sergeant stopped the suspect in the 18500 block of 52nd Avenue W. A record check showed the car owner had a suspended driver’s license, according to the police report.
As the sergeant walked up to the 1995 Acura Integra, the man, 25, hit the gas. The sergeant gave chase.
The suspect ran a stop sign as he turned onto northbound Highway 99 and cut off several cars, according to the police report. He then drove along 164th Street SW at speeds of up to 80 mph, and a second Lynnwood officer joined the chase.
The suspect turned onto southbound I-5, racing at 105 mph, exited onto southbound I-405 and got off at Highway 527, then shot back onto I-405 and southbound I-5.
The man, driving at up to 90 mph, wove in and out of traffic before whipping from the carpool lane across traffic to exit at N. 175th Street in Shoreline.
At the bottom of the offramp, a State Patrol car struck the suspect’s vehicle and rotated it clockwise, bringing it to a stop.
But the suspect still didn’t give up. He accelerated, the police report says, his vehicle scraping the length of the patrol car and smashing into a Lynnwood police car.
The trooper and Lynnwood officer ran toward the suspect’s car. The trooper smashed out the driver’s side window with his baton, and the Lynnwood officer broke the passenger window.
With the car still moving, the trooper reached through the broken window and grabbed the key from the ignition, according to the report.
The Lynnwood officer pointed a stun gun at the suspect’s chest, and the man surrendered. He had a Seattle warrant for his arrest after failing to appear in court after being charged with taking a vehicle without permission.
The man was treated at Northwest Hospital for cuts to his face from flying glass. No officers were injured.
The suspect was booked into the Lynnwood Jail for investigation of eluding police and was later transferred to the Snohomish County Jail. He was released on Monday after posting bail.
