SEATTLE – A former state trooper who fondled 10 women during traffic stops must pay the $40,000 he was fined at his sentencing, a judge ruled.
Michael Idland has twice petitioned the court to get out of the financial obligations, but the court has no intention of letting him, King County Superior Court Judge Ronald Kessler wrote in an order Wednesday.
“The court imposed a sentence it deemed appropriate for Mr. Idland, based upon Mr. Idland’s crimes, his breach of authority, the vulnerability of his victims and Mr. Idland’s persistent refusal to accept responsibility for his criminal behavior,” Kessler wrote in the order.
Kessler stunned both the prosecution and defense a year ago when he ordered Michael Idland to pay for the almost 17 months he spent in solitary confinement in the King County Jail, plus $15,000 in victims’ penalties and other fees; he also ordered that Idland serve four years of probation.
Idland, who maintained he did nothing wrong, entered a modified guilty plea to three counts of sexual misconduct.
